National Workshop in Honour of the 74th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

In collaboration with the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy, the Faculty of Law at Tishk International University organised a National Workshop in Honour of the 74th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Two distinguished speakers, Assist. Prof. Dr. Najdat Sabri Ismail from the Faculty of Law, TIU and Assist. Prof. Dr. Idris Qadir from Soran University provided in-depth explanations of the significance of the day’s observance and both the national and international implications.

The workshop moderator was Dr. Mohammad Salih Mustafa, Head of the IRD Department. The first speaker, Assist. Prof. Dr. Najdat Sabri Ismail discussed the importance of law in society and the necessity to defend and advance human rights. He explained the relationship between human rights preservation and social promotion to ensure peace, stability, and social advancement. The second speaker, Assist. Prof. Dr. Idris Qadir traced the history of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) to December 10th, 1948, following a United Nations General Assembly Resolution 217A.

He explained how it since became a universal standard for all people and nations as it outlines fundamental human rights for the first time in human history, particularly the rights to life, liberty, and property. Other equally significant rights that enhance human life include freedom of speech and expression, respect for human dignity, the ability to assemble, receive an education, have a family life and privacy, work, and other rights. Many nations have integrated these fundamental human rights into their constitutions, even though adherence to them still leaves much to be desired, in accordance with UDHR, which asks for their universal recognition, acceptance, protection, and promotion.

Following the presentation, a Q&A session was held, and the participants, which included academics, seasoned attorneys, retired judges, legislators, and students, enriched the workshop with valuable, intriguing questions that were effectively addressed by the presenters. The workshop speakers and moderator received a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Faculty of Law to thank them for their contribution and outstanding efforts.
