First Semester

LAW 101- Introduction to Law I:

This course will focus on the following topics ; sources of law and the hierarchy of the norms; characteristics of common law and the continental legal systems; main branches of public and private law; organisation of the Iraqi judicial system; the application of norms and the methods of interpretation; transactions and rights.

LAW 103 – Introduction to Islamic Law I:

This course is an An introduction to the history and scope of Islamic law and the legal system including an examination of comparative issues relating to Islamic and western secular legal and constitutional thought.

LAW 113 – Constitutional Law and Human Rights:

This course comprised in to two main scopes of law, the first part will discuess The theory of constitution, the constitution making and modification, the elements of constitution, the political systems , the states

authorities, the general rights and its kinds.In the second part the following subjects are discussed; General principles of international human rights law, European Human Rights Convention, definition of human rights, the basic mechanisms for enforcing human rights and the role of the political realities in promoting human rights

LAW 107 – History of Law and Ancient Iraqi Law :

This course will examinetopics such as the emergence of law in the ancient nations, sources and development of ancient law, the course will also explore ancient laws, such as the code of Hammurabi and Iraqi law history after Islamic conquest.

LAW 155 – Legal Terminology:

The emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of English legal terminology throughout the study of law.The lecture will be conducted in the English language.

IT 103 – Introduction to Information Technology:

Fundamental office tools. Word processing, document formatting, paragraph formats, styles, hyphenation, spelling and grammar checking, outline, table of contents, indexes, citations, captions and bibliography; creating master document and sub-documents, tracking changes in a document; multiple user editing, versioning, mail merge and mailing labels. Introduction to spreadsheet concepts, formatting worksheets, managing worksheets; writing formulas and use of built-in functions and auditing; conditional formatting; common mistakes in writing formulas, circular reference, missing reference in formulas; charts. Database concepts. Preparing presentations, templates, use of multimedia

DBT 101 – Academic Debate and Critical Thinking

This course is designed to develop students’ abilities and skills in academic communication and debate. The topics of this course train the students on using sources for academic communication, putting knowledge into good use, and raising academic questions and answering questions in an academic way. The course also aims to teach students how to accept and respect differing opinions, and how to conduct academic arguments. In this course, students are directed to raise questions and analyze academic texts logically and critically, i.e. they are guided to conduct a critical analysis of what they read, and are provided with the opportunity to practice and develop their skills by writing their reflections on the material studied and on their own learning. Moreover, the students will be assisted in this course with considering the problems of their country, and making suggestions to solve problems relying on academic mechanism and methodology.

KUR 105 – Kurdology I :

Kurdology is an essential discipline for residents of the Kurdistan Region. It examines the Kurdish regions, its people, its geography, its philosophies and religions down through history and helps students understand the society they live in today.

Non- Technical Elective Courses

This course gives the law student right to choose one non- technical subject. Although the selected subject not related directly with the students field, it designed to improve their analytical ability for legal cases.

Second Semester

LAW 102 Introduction to Law:

This course is the follow up course of the Law 102. It will continue with the examination of issues such as the methods of social control through law, grievance-remedial technique, and private arranging technique, constitutive and administrative-regulatory techniques. The concept of legal culture, the questions of value in law and the standards of good law-making will also be discussed.

LAW 104 Introduction to Islamic Law II:

Explaining the sources of Islamic law, the Holy Quran and the sunnah, and their relation with the Islamic jurisprudence and positive law, as well as examining the other sources of Islamic law, such as custom, consensus and measurement, in addition to defining the property and its kinds.

LAW 114 Constitutional Law and Human Rights II :

General principles of International Human Rights Law, European Human Rights Convention, definition of human rights, the basic mechanisms for enforcing human rights and the role of the political realities in promoting human rights.

LAW 108 History of Law and Roman Law :

The Roman Law compulsory courses aim the explanation of the importance and the historical development of the Roman Law which shapes the fundamentals of the legal system of the Iraq .The course also studies the political and legal ages of the Roman State in order to determine the cause and stages of the shaping up of the Roman institutions.

Third Semester

LAW 257- Introduction to Law in English:

In this course functions of law, law and ethics, law and justice, law and norm, law and compulsion, law and imperative, law and accommodation, sources of law, construction, discretion, juridical science. In this course, basic concepts of law, the rules which are affecting the social life and directing it and legal rules its internal relations; as well as constitution, laws, other legal documents and its meaning and effects are examined in English.

LAW 201- Civil law (Obligations):

The scope of this course is to teach different types of obligations and applicable general principles to them. Besides basic principles regulating contractual relations and obligations deriving from acts against law and also basic conditions of tortuous liability (Damage, causal relation) different types of tortuous liabilities will be taught in this course.

LAW 203 – Penal Law I (General Part):

Legality, sources and application of the criminal laws; General theory of crime; elements of a crime;crimes of negligence;mistake and ignorance of the laws.

LAW 209 – Administrative Law and Judiciary I :

The subject of an introduction to the general characteristics and nature of administrative law, covering the fundamental principles, organization and operation of the administrative structure of government, as well as judicial review and related issues are examined in this course.

LAW 211 Commercial Law (General Part) :

The subjects which is examined in this course: concept of commercial acts of the trader “businessman” and legal duties on the trader and the unfair competition.

LAW 221 Personal Status Law :

The law of marriage in regard with Muslims in Iraq through explaining marriage, goal, elements, conditions, conclusions of it, the capacity of marriage, the rights of both man and woman, like dowry, alimony, etc.

Forth Semester

LAW 228 Constitutional Law in English :

This course covers a wide range of topics relating to constitutional framework for the organization of the State and various political systems, including the conceptual analysis of the constitution and “constitutionalism”, acts of parliament such as laws and parliamentary resolutions, decrees having force of law, regulations and by-laws, theocratic and democratic sovereignty, state forms as regards the structure and the exercise of sovereignty, electoral systems, characteristics of the parliamentary, presidential and semi-presidential systems. In addition to the doctrinal background bearing on these topics, leading cases in comparative constitutional law will be analyzed.

LAW 212 Civil Law (Obligations) II :

During the first semester, this course will focus on the general principles covering law of obligations, namely the formation of contracts, offer and acceptance, capacity, material and immaterial mistake, fraud, duress, legal cause, contractual obligation, freedom of contract, limitations of the freedom of contract, public order and mandatory provisions, concept of debt, obligations of special nature, assignment of claims and assumption of obligations, impossibility, and termination of contracts .

LAW 214 Penal Law II (General Part) :

The subjects which are examined in this course: general principles and techniques of interpretation governing criminal law and the general theory of crime, historic development of criminal law, classification of offence, extradition, criminal concept, aim of punishment, variety of punishment, security measures.

LAW 210 Administrative Law and Judiciary II :

This course will cover administrative contracts, build-operate-transfer contracts, and supervision of administrative authorities, administrative courts and procedure, actions for annulment of administrative acts, and compensation and arbitration.

LAW 218 Commercial Law (Corporations) :

Commercial matters are covered by the Code, which describes as commercial any issue that is related to a commercial enterprise. The subject of the course includes commercial provisions and activities, commercial enterprises, commercial disputes and merchants and the status of the persons assisting merchants, namely commercial representatives, brokers, commercial middleman and agents.

LAW 224Financial law

This course is designed to familiarize the student with the concepts of income, identification of the proper taxpayer, tax liability, duties and responsibilities of taxpayers, deductions and credits in computing taxable income, allocation of tax items to taxable years, taxation of business entity, gains and losses from the disposition of property, tax evasion, tax procedure, crimes relating to tax law, and solution of conflicts arising out of tax law.

LAW 222 Personal Status Law II (Divorce)

This course focuses mostly on the principles of separation of the spouses, namely dissolution of marriage, divorce (for consideration payable by the wife), separation by way of courts besides to effects of this separation.

Fifth Semester

LAW 301 Civil Law I (Civil Contracts) :

This course has been designed to help students know more about the fundamental elements of civil contracts in the Iraqi civil law which includes sale contracts. The course focuses as well on getting students acquire the essential knowledge regarding sale contracts and what relates thereto starting from concluding the contract, conditions of its validity, degree of required capacity for conclusion, to the legal effects incumbent upon the sale contract through discussing the buyer’s and seller’s obligations.. The course also provides via theoretical information, analysis of legal texts, and some modern issues related to the course’s subjects in a way that focuses on the student’s activity, and their participation and interaction in the educational process.

LAW 315 Public International Law and International Organization :

This course offers a survey of a branch of law dealing with the normative factor of international relations the source of which are the international agreements and international customary law. Topics include also the jurisdictional aspects of international law and the settlement of disputes. In the additional part of this course followed issue is examined comprehensive study of the development of international organization and its role in the contemporary world.

LAW 317 Penal Law I (Special) :

Particular crimes as homicide, assault, sexual offences, theft and related offences, offences of damage to property, offences against constitutional and public order, public health, forgery.

LAW 303 Personal Status Law Inheritances :

In this course followed subjects are will be examined : legal inheritors, The transactions related to death, invalidity of transactions related to death, abatement, equalization, the transfer of the Inheritance, receival of the inheritance, official liquidation, distribution of the inheritance.

LAW 323 Civil Procedures :

This course examines the court structure in Iraq, status of judges, initiation of proceedings, summary and ordinary procedures, jurisdiction, petition of the case and reply, evidence, burden of proof, means of proof including written instruments, witnesses, oath and expert evidence, effect of judgments, and enforcement procedures.

LAW 345 Commercial Contracts :

Students will have a broad understanding of the principles of the law of contracts and be able to demonstrate their application to the creation, performance and discharge of contractual obligations in commercial situations.

LAW 327 Criminal Law in English :

All subjects which examined in LAW 203 are matters of this course in English .

Sixth Semester

LAW 302 Civil Law II (Civil Contracts) :

This course will examine various types of contracts such as, lease, loan transactions, agency/representation, guarantees, contract for publication, construction contracts, and ordinary partnerships. The formation, validity, and specific characteristics of each of these contracts will be analyzed throughout the course

LAW 316 Public International Law and Int. Organizations II :

This course offers a survey of a branch of law dealing with the normative factor of international relations the source of which are the international agreements and international customary law. Topics include also the jurisdictional aspects of international law and the settlement of disputes. LAW 312 Labor Law and Social Security :

Basic concepts of labor law, including the worker, employer, and employment contract, and of the Turkish law on the contractual relationship between the worker and the employer.

All subjects which examined in LAW 315 are matters of this course in English.

Seventh Semester

LAW 401 Civil Law I ( Real Rights) :

This course tackles the important branch of the financial rights which students have examined its primary principles in a previous course, and after they have already studied the terms of obligations. This course considers deeply the said rights especially the right of ownership where it is being taught in terms of its concept, scope and denotations set on property whether the legal or the consensual ones, in addition to the legal ways aiming at protecting that right, after which students are familiarized with the types of property, methods of acquisition as well as ways of termination thereof, then the course helps them come across differentiating between movables and immovables, so the student recognizes the commercial register and the governing rules.

LAW 403 Private International Law I :

This courses deals with what follows: Conflict of laws, international procedure law, private international law, citizenship and foreigners’ law, recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments and arbitral awards, international jurisdiction of Iraq courts.

LAW 419 Criminal Proceeding Law I :

This course deals with the enforcement of substantive criminal law. Emphasis is placed on the structure of Iraqi criminal courts, main actors participating in Turkish criminal procedure system, rights of accused persons, collection of evidence of crime, rules on arrest, search and seizure, and indictment of criminals

LAW 407 Commercial Papers

Law of Commercial Papers deals with: legal principles of commercial papers as negotiable instruments; their definition, characteristics and types as regulated by the Commercial Code of Iraq. Based on this the course will in particular cover the following topics: the definition of negotiable instruments, characteristics of negotiable instruments, types of negotiable instruments are: bills of exchange, promissory notes and cheques. The course will also examine a number of important decisions that have been issued by the Court of Cassation in Iraq relating to negotiable instruments.

LAW 409 Islamic Jurisprudence :

In the seventh semester will survey Islamic commercial, criminal and family laws and their influence on the modern age.

LAW 411 Law of Proofs :

This course will examine the rules governing the admission, exclusion, and presentation of evidence in judicial proceedings.

LAW 415 Commercial Contracts in English :

All subjects which examined in LAW 345 are matters of this course in English.

Eighth Semester

LAW 402 Civil Law II (Real Rights) :

This course aims to explain the real rights that branch out of the right of ownership such as rights of easement and usufruct, all according to Iraqi laws.

LAW 404 Private International Law II :

The primary subject to be addressed in this course is Choice of Law. Controversies involving parties, events and issues originating in more than one State require making a choice from various substantive and procedural laws to govern the decision-making process. Choice of Law draws upon Family Law, Law of Torts, Law of Property, Law of Inheritance, and Company Law for its context. The course also covers some aspects of the recognition of foreign judgments.

LAW 406 Criminal Proceedings II :

This course emphasis is placed on the structure of Iraqi criminal courts, main actors participating in Iraqi criminal procedure system, rights of accused persons, collection of evidence of crime, rules on arrest, search and seizure, and indictment of criminals.

LAW 418 Commercial Papers II :

Negotiable instruments, drafts, bonds, bills of exchange.

LAW 408 Islamic Jurisprudence II :

Islamic public international law and human rights and Islamic law will be examined in this course.

LAW 410 Law of enforcement

Within the concept of enforcement law, the subjects: Enforcement organization, enforcement of the final court decisions, enforcement without final court decisions, objection to a payment order, annulment of the objection, action of restitution and action for the establishment of a negative

fact, attachment and attachment of the negotiable instruments, and ancillary attachment are examined.

LAW 446 Graduation Project

This course aims to prepare students for doing research in various legal fields. That helps students to discover legal problems and find appropriate solutions depending on theoretical and practical knowledge they were got it in their class since they start studying law. The student researches process go on under supervision of law school faculty members.

LAW 420 Internship at the Court

Faculty of Law’s goal is to prepare students to practice law, and as part of achieving this goal we believe that experiential learning, i.e., learning by doing, is extremely important. We believe that certain skills requisite for extraordinary legal professionals can only be learned outside of the classroom. Faculty of Law externships expose students to different models of legal skills related to specific areas of law, allow students to acquire greater insight into the process of lawyering, permit students to develop a sense of professional development, and provide students with an opportunity to reflect on and learn from experiences in a supportive yet real-world environment.
