International Workshop: Human Rights Approach to the Sustainable Development Goals

As part of the university’s educational activities the Faculty of Law at Tishk International University (TIU) organized an International Workshop titled: A Human Rights Approach to the Sustainable Development Goals, held on February 20th, 2024.

Workshop Speakers: Mr. Zito Siany, Human Rights Officer  – United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) , and Mr. Hawzheen Ahmed, Human Rights Officer – United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Workshop Moderator: Asst. Prof.Dr. Najdat Akrayee Assistant Lecturer at the Faculty of Law.

During the workshop, attendees discussed the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 interconnected global goals adopted by UN member states in 2015. These goals serve as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. Human rights are integrated throughout the SDGs, viewed as essential for sustainable development. Although not explicitly listed as a separate goal, human rights are woven into various aspects of the SDGs. Human rights are integral to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, as they underpin the overarching aim of ensuring dignity, equality, and well-being for all people, leaving no one behind.

Dr. Sabah Qasim Khedir, Head of the Law Department, on behalf of the Faculty of Law, expressed sincere gratitude to the speakers and the moderator for their insightful presentations. He emphasized the faculty’s commitment to continuing to foster similar academic and international workshop endeavours in the future, reinforcing the university’s dedication to providing a comprehensive education that extends beyond traditional classrooms.
