Seminar: Combating Drugs in the Kurdistan Region

In continuation of scientific activities, on 1 February 2025, the Faculty of Law organized an academic seminar entitled Combating Drugs in the Kurdistan Region: The Legal Framework between Criminal Deterrence, Rehabilitative Treatment, and Practical Field Challenges.

The seminar was delivered by Mr. Mohammad Hamid Abbas, an officer at the Directorate of Drug Control under the General Directorate of Asayish in Erbil. The session was moderated by Dr. Mohammad Abdulkarim Sharif and was attended by a distinguished group of faculty members and students of the faculty.

The seminar provided an in-depth analysis of the criminal policy adopted in the Kurdistan Region to address the problem of drug abuse, with particular emphasis on achieving a balance between deterrent criminal sanctions and rehabilitative programs aimed at the reform and reintegration of convicted individuals. It also highlighted the most significant obstacles and field practices faced by security agencies in law enforcement and in curbing the spread of this phenomenon.

This seminar was held in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 16, which focuses on promoting peace, justice, and strong and effective institutions, and Goal 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all through combating substance abuse.
