Semina: The Codification of Sharia Rulings in Matters of Personal Status.
In continuation of academic activities on 6 January 2025, the Faculty of Law organized an academic seminar entitled “ The Codification of Sharia Rulings in Matters of Personal Status According to the Ja‘fari Shiʿi School: An Analytical Study Between Jurisprudence and Legal Codification.” The seminar was delivered by Dr. Khalid Jalal, who presented an in-depth analytical study of the codified Sharia rulings governing personal status issues under the Ja‘fari Shiʿi school of law. The presentation highlighted the relationship between Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and legal codification, as well as the extent to which classical juristic texts are compatible with the requirements of modern legal regulation.
The lecture addressed the philosophy of Sharia-based codification and the methodology adopted in selecting and formulating juristic rulings within a legal code. It also examined the practical implications of applying these rulings in judicial practice, particularly with regard to women’s and family rights and the legal safeguards necessary to ensure family stability. In addition, the speaker discussed key practical challenges that courts may encounter in enforcing these provisions, supported by illustrative examples drawn from judicial practice.
The seminar was well attended by faculty members and researchers and witnessed active engagement and scholarly discussion. A number of questions and academic interventions were raised, contributing to a deeper and more nuanced examination of the jurisprudential and legal dimensions of the topic.
This seminar aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5 on gender equality and the empowerment of women and Goal 16 on peace, justice, and strong institutions, through promoting legal and religious awareness, supporting the justice system, and reinforcing the rule of law in matters of personal status.
