National Workshop on Disability Awareness and Social Inclusion

On 10 December 2025, the Faculty of Law at Tishk International University, in cooperation with the Faculty of Applied Sciences/Department of Physiotherapy, organized a national workshop entitled “Disability Awareness and Social Inclusion” on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The workshop aimed to enhance awareness of disability-related issues from legal and human rights perspectives, alongside health and social dimensions, in order to reinforce the principles of inclusion and equality within the university environment and the wider community. The scientific sessions included two specialized lectures. The first was delivered by Dr. Mohammed Abdulkarim Sharif and was entitled “Legal Guarantees for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Light of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), Iraqi Legislation, and the Legislation of the Kurdistan Region.” This was followed by a lecture by Dr. Surajo K. Suleiman entitled “The Concept of Disability, Its Spectrum, Characteristics, and Health Implications.”

The workshop was attended by a number of faculty members from the Colleges of Law and Applied Sciences, as well as students of law and physiotherapy and invited participants. This provided an effective platform for interdisciplinary academic dialogue and the exchange of scholarly expertise.

The organization of this workshop is consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (SDG 4): Quality Education through the promotion of inclusive education; Goal 10 (SDG 10): Reduced Inequalities by enhancing the inclusion of persons with disabilities; and Goal 16 (SDG 16): Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions through the promotion of a rights-based approach and the rule of law.
