On February 24, 2024, the Faculty of Law at Tishk International University organized an academic debate for its students. The debate, titled “Marriage as a Reason for Exemption and Mitigation of Punishment,” was supervised by Dr. Muhammed Abdulkarim.
The speakers were Handren Ala adin, Abdulqahar Muhammed, Srood Qadir, Shayma Muaid, Barin Azad, Rozi Zana, and Husuna Habbar. The event was attended by Asst. Prof. Dr. Hussien Balisani, Dr. Sabah Qasim Khedir, and other faculty members.
The debate focused on Articles 398 and 427 of the Iraqi Penal Law No. 111 of 1969. The students were divided into two teams:
- One team argued for retaining these legal provisions, claiming they protect women and preserve social values.
- The opposing team presented legal, social, psychological, and religious arguments against the provisions, emphasizing their negative impact on the rights of victims.
